Whangamata is a spectacular beachside holiday resort with about 4,000 permanent residents, expanding to about 50,000 residents over the Christmas – New Year holiday period.

As well as having some of the best surf breaks, the beach provides for safe swimming and all water sports are catered for.

Other local sporting activities include golf (both a 9 and an 18 hole course), mountain bike trails, and both short and long hiking trails. Fishing charters are also available and in season big game fishing is possible further off the coast.
